Too much excitement.

naughty dog charas

So on Saturday and Sunday, I streamed 25 hours as part of Extra Life 2013 in the name of Boston Children’s Hospital, themed around games from the super-studio we’ve come to know as Naughty Dog.

I unfortunately didn’t do the entire 25 hours in one go due to fatigue setting in (playing a very frustrating bit in Jak II probably didn’t help matters), but I made it my mission to make sure that I at least did a combined 25 hours with a 12 hour stream on Saturday and a 13 hour stream yesterday, all in honour of Naughty Dog and all for charity.

Things did go wrong at the weekend. Uncharted 3 wouldn’t work for an unknown reason, Crash Team Racing – the game picked to belatedly replace Uncharted 3 – wouldn’t install on the PS3 HDD (I therefore reverted to Crash Bandicoot), the PC kept dropping the internet connection (and therefore the stream) during Uncharted 1 and Crash Bandicoot and there was almost a point on Saturday morning where the stream almost didn’t happen at all due to the PC being a massive…well, you know. That last bit didn’t help when trying to sort everything out from 4am in the morning.

But in the end, it was worth it. I got to play Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jak II, Jak III, Crash Bandicoot and The Last of Us. I had fun doing it and I managed to beat the, if somewhat modest, goal I set in doing this stream of $100 (just – it was a buck over a $100!) for Boston Children’s Hospital.

To those who donated, thank you so much. Thank you, thank you, thank you! A million thank yous to each of you! To those who just spread the good word on Twitter or Facebook, you also have my undying thanks. And to those who just watched, you also get my thanks. This was just brilliant to do.

I do have one last thank you and it’s probably the biggest of the lot, if I’m honest. This may get a bit too fanboyish, so for those of a nervous discomfort, you may want to get out now.

This is starting to feel like a somewhat regular occurrence. But it still doesn’t dilute how much love and respect I have for you, Naughty Dog. I themed the stream around your games because I an undying respect and love for them, and finally being able at last to play the Jak & Daxter games beyond merely the first ten minutes of Jak 1 was fun to do (though dear god, I wanted to pull my hair out at Jak II).

So the biggest thank you of all goes to you for making the games that made the stream happen. I enjoyed every second playing those games, as I have done so before (except for J&D for the reasons stated above) – for fun or frustrating times in each game – and it was made even better that I managed to raise money in doing so.

Thank you to the teams you lead, Evan and Christophe. Thank you, Jason and Andy for starting it out so long ago. Thanks, Neil and Bruce for The Last of Us. And thanks – and happy 10th anniversary – Amy Hennig as well as Justin Richmond, Josh Scherr and Richard Lemarchand (no longer at ND, but still, credit due and all that) plus Bruce and Neil (again) and countless other folk for your work on Uncharted.

And to the remainder of folk at Naughty Dog, thanks for the work you do. Just, thank you.

Anyways, if you want to catch up on the two 12/13 hour streams, you can find links below. They’re broken up as a result of the PC dropping the internet connection several times throughout Saturday and Sunday. Here you are.

Next year, a bigger fundraising goal and to actually make it 25 hours in one go. That last bit is a promise. Anyone want to pay money to see something that still scares me as a grown man for next year as part of the theme I already have in mind for it?
