Update: So yeah, silly me forgot to forsee that PSN would be shitting its pants and be down for a good chunk of the afternoon just as the stream was getting set to go. And with a portion of PS4’s main features dictated by PSN, it didn’t feel right giving a proper tour of the console without being signed into PSN.
That said, we’re still on. Just a bit belated is all. And yes, stream works! HDCP be damned! Tune in from 2pm and in full 1080p.
Original: Two weeks after its US launch and a week after Xbox One’s head-start into the world, Sony brings PlayStation 3’s next-generation successor into the world (at least, the European-shaped world anyways). PlayStation 4 may be the last of the two to launch, but it was the first to reveal itself to the world back in February and its maintained a massive PR and marketing advantage over its Microsoft brethren since.
From going first in New York with the PlayStation Meeting to giving Microsoft its Red Wedding moment at E3 to being more open to independent developers and thensome, PS4 has gained a significant amount of goodwill from consumers. Its not been entirely smooth, though.
There’s the issue of HDCP restrictions for outside capture for Lets Players, journalists and websites (myself being among that said group) without the need of a HDMI stripper; a loss of previously-promised day one features like the suspend/resume feature and of course, the loss of games to its launch line-up, burdened the most by the gaping holes left by Watch Dogs – a multi-platform game that was heavily advertised on PlayStation – and first-party driving game DriveClub, both now sitting in early next year (though no doubt bolstered by the recent announce of the next Uncharted game, Naughty Dog’s first PS4 game).
If all goes well – and I hope to shitting Christ it better – I should have a PS4 with me tomorrow featuring Killzone: Shadow Fall and FIFA 14 plus perhaps Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, which will put the series in my last chance saloon after the disappointments of III, Revelations and Brotherhood. I’ll also be downloading Housemarque’s Resogun and Contrast from PS Plus. So guess what? Stream time!
I’ll also poke around the UI a bit and thensome, so expect those.
After an absolutely awful start with PlayStation 3 that Sony eventually managed to claw back with, it’s go-time for Sony. See you tomorrow.
