“I’m looking for some sailors.”

shenmue

We begin tonight with an admission. I openly mock the fact that there’ll never be a Shenmue III to fellow peers on Twitter, but I’ve never actually played either Shenmue or Shenmue II, despite it being one of the most beloved games of all time.

It’s a game that has given quite a bit to the games industry at large, most particularly the introduction of QTEs in games. Yu Suzuki has been the creator of many games throughout his career, including Outrun and Virtua Fighter, but it’s fair to say that Shenmue can be argued as his masterpiece.

Digital Spy games editor Matthew Reynolds cites it as his favourite game. For nearly an hour-and-a-half, let him tell you why the first instalment in what should’ve been a trilogy is something he holds dear. And there’s Sonic The Hedgehog toothpaste mentioned too.

You can find it below via audio (Games Mentioned and YouTube version to follow).

[Editor’s note: You may remember this was due to be a live episode, My Favourite Game’s first ever in its short existence. Due to circumstances out of my hands, however, this had to be pre-recorded. I still hope to do a live episode of My Favourite Game at some point, though. Not this season now, but perhaps later down the line in a future episode]
