“Let mother read you a story.”
We begin tonight with a story. From Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma, speaking of his disinterest in making a Master Quest version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. From an Iwata Asks in 2009:
“…As someone who has been in charge of the dungeons [on Ocarina of Time], I just couldn’t get that excited over making a flip-side [Ocarina of Time: Master Quest] for them. I couldn’t see it turning into a new Legend of Zelda, either. But we’d been told to make The Legend of Zelda. It isn’t as though we could just say, “I don’t want to”, and end it there. At that point, [Shigeru] Miyamoto-san gave us a tradeoff: he said, if we could make a new Legend of Zelda game in one year, then it wouldn’t have to be a “flip-side”.
“At first, we had absolutely no idea what sort of thing we were supposed to make, and we just kept expanding our plans… At that point, the “Three-Day System”, the idea of a compact world to be played over and over again, came down from Miyamoto-san and one other director, [Yoshiaki] Koizumi-san. We added that to the mix, and then, finally, we saw the full substance of a Legend of Zelda game we could make in one year.”
And what it managed to turn out in a year was what could be argued as one of the best Zelda games ever, among the likes of Ocarina and Wind Waker.
Tonight, My Favourite Game explores The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask in detail with Chucklefish Community Manager Molly Carroll, who claims it as her most cherished game. But not before perhaps a contest between it and another game, eventually an honourable mention, which she’s put hundreds of hours into.
